When and How to Use Images in the Classroom

In many courses, students are asked to create presentations.  We often encourage them to use images and other media, but neglect to give them guidelines for how to use these images and media in ways that are copyright compliant.

Digital images can generally be used in lectures, presentations, in scholarly, non-profit settings, particularly if the presentation is only shown to the class or available through a password protected course management site.

For copyrighted images, it is best to cite the image, or at least attribute it somewhere on the presentation, or follow the guidelines of the Creative Commons licensing.

Don't use more than five images by the same artist in one presentation.

The easiest and safest way to navigage this is to encourage your students to use Creative Commons or Public Domain images, which are pleatiful and easy to find.
